For the last number of years, Queensland state schools have been able to apply to become an Independent Public School (IPS). In 2013, our local feeder high school, Kenmore SHS, became an IPS and in 2014 our nearest neighbour, Kenmore South SS, became an IPS.
Following the recent announcement from the Queensland Government launching the Independent Public School application process for 2015, Kenmore SS is considering submitting an application to become an IPS for the 2015 school year.
Independent Public Schools are given greater autonomy and localised decision making as part of the initiative. The process allows greater opportunity for parents, principals and teachers to work together and have a greater say on how their schools are run. A School Council is elected that provides strategic advice and direction for the school.
At this stage, the IPS application has been discussed at staff meetings and P&C Association meetings. To further inform parents about the process, the school is offering an information session on Thursday 7 August from 2:15pm – 3:00pm. If you would like to hear about the IPS initiative or if you have any questions or ideas about this topic, please feel free to attend the school to listen and share your thoughts.
